Klaudiusz Baran
Born in Przemyśl. In 1995 he graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, class of Professor Jerzy Jurek. As a scholarship holder of the French government he continued his studies at Conservatoire “Paul Dukas” in Paris, class of Professor Max Bonnay.
He won the 1st Prizes at the All-Poland Accordion Competition in Katowice (1993), the International Accordion Competition in Castelfidardo (Italy, 1997) and the International Accordion Competition in Paris (1997).
He participated in many festivals, such as: “The Warsaw Autumn”, “The Concert of the Year” in the Porczyński Gallery in Warsaw, the Bydgoszcz Festival of Music Competition Winners„ “Lutosławski’s Forum” at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, Festival of Contemporary Music “Musica Polonica Nova” in Wrocław, “Musica Moderna” in Łódź, Accordion Music Festival in Kragujevac (Serbia), “Bayan and Bayanists” in Moscow, “Brawo Maestro” in Kąśna Dolna, “The Cross Culture Festival” in Warsaw, “The Dialogue of Four Cultures” in Łódź, “EXPO 2008” in Saragossa, Accordion Music Festival in St. Petersburg, “The Polish Culture Season” in Russia, “Tango Festival y Mundial de Baile” in Buenos Aires, and many others.
As a soloist he cooperated with the orchestras of most of the Polish philharmonics, as well as the National Orchestra of the Polish Radio, Orchestra of the Polish Radio “Amadeus”, “Sinfonietta Cracovia”, the Polish Radio Orchestra, the AUKSO Orchestra, “Capella Bydgostiensis”, “Camerata Academia”, “Vratislavia“, Dresdner Philharmoniker, Philharmonie Meinengen, and a number of others, under the baton of such conductors as: Agnieszka Duczmal, Hector Guzman, Zsolt Hamar, Reinbert de Leeuw, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Jiři Malat, Charles Olivieri-Munroe, Michał Nesterowicz, Reinhard Petersen, Daniel Raiskin, Mirosław Skoryk, Stefanos Tsialis, Krzysztof Urbański, Lucas Vis, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, Ryszard Zimak.
He gave concerts together with such artists as: Roby Lakatos, Ivan Monighetti, Julius Berger, Susana Moncayo von Hase, Krzysztof Jakowicz, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Tomasz Strahl, Andrzej Bauer, Michał Nagy, Vadim Brodski, Waldemar Malicki, Paweł Gusnar, the Royal String Quartet, and others.
In March 2009, as part of the “Amber Road Festival“ in Kalisz, together with a German cellist Julius Berger and the Kalisz Philharmonic Orchestra he had an opportunity to perform the piece “Sieben Worte” by Sofia Gubaidulina under the baton of Adam Klocek – in the presence of the composer, who also participated in it.
He is a member and founder of such ensembles as: Tangata Quintet, with which he was twice nominated for the Fryderyk Award (2004, 2005), Machina del Tango and DesOrient.
He performed solo, in chamber ensembles and with symphony orchestras in Poland and abroad – in France, Italy, Austria, Ukraine, Russia, Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Belarus, Luxembourg, Serbia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia, Great Britain, Norway, China, Switzerland and Argentina.
He is invited as a lecturer to the international courses of music interpretation (Poland, France, Serbia) and as a jury member of national and international competitions (Poland, Italy, Slovakia, Serbia).
In 2003 his CD was released by the SonyClassical record company with solo and chamber works by Astor Piazzolla, the album won the award of the Phonographic Academy – “Fryderyk 2003” – in the category “Best Album – Chamber Music”.
He made numerous recordings for the Polish Radio and Television, as well as with film, theatre and light music.
His students have been awarded over 50 times at international and all-Poland accordion competitions, and inter-disciplinary competitions, in solo and chamber categories.
He is employed at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw as Professor; in the period of 2002–2005 he performed duties of Head of the Interuniversitary Chair of Accordion there, and from 2008 he was Deputy Dean of the Department of Instrumental Studies, and since 2011 he has been Dean of the Department of Instrumental Studies. For the term of office of 2012–2016 Professor Klaudiusz Baran holds the function of Prorector for Artistic Affairs.
He has been decorated with the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
